Born Anxious is a homegrown clothing label with two objectives, to make the clothes as comfortable as possible, whilst also remaining planet friendly, and to hold important information that will aim to help not only the child, but also the caregiver as well when required. As an autism mum myself, I have thought about what could help me and other caregivers whilst trying to be as generic as possible within the designs, alongside giving those the opportunity to personalise their products as well.

School photos ! Haircuts and why I never risk it!

It’s been known in the past that I’ve taken it upon myself to cut my own children’s hair! Am I a hairdresser ? Answer is no😂, I used to think it would be very simple after all it looks easy , it isn’t and I never got the results I had in my mind   , I would start cutting then bad ,bad things would happen, almost as if ,the scissors had been programmed to scare  cut mode! So after numerous attempts on my other two children over the years, and multiple rescue missions to the hairdresser or barber I gave up , hair cutting, tweaking, trimming and enhancing was no more, I didn’t even own a pair of those things that can if in the wrong hands ruin lives!😂

I once cut my sons hair to the point he looked like a sloth a graduated short fringe around his face! Some of the results have been catastrophic, and I had become a family joke  , I had retired from hairdressing rebel style .

so when I had Oscar and ,as he grew and we discovered he wasn’t a fan of hairdressers, I took to trimming his hair while he was asleep which to be fair was fine all the time I had scissors , after all I had plenty of experience 😂as his hair grew and grew into a Noel Edmunds style mullet , this is no joke !it grew upwards ! Someone said ‘ get the sensory clippers ,’get them they said! It will be easy they said!’looking back now I feel this person was far too overly confident! And perhaps unknowing of my previous mishaps 😂

so I try these clippers, no cares in the world at all, so with speed and zero planning  I pounce, take the opportunity to gently trim his hair at the back , I’m doing it I hear this huge NOOOOOOOOO , oh god I hadn’t attached the length thing he was bald! Bald! Right up the back, I tried but it was beyond redemption and he was by this point not letting me do any more , he looked like a victim or  Viking! , we ended up having to shave his hair off totally! He looked like a child in need💙

For me I build up to a style convincing myself that it will change my lifestyle, confidence, make me be as amazing as the picture I’ve found, truth is you don’t get  the face, and your still you, but that’s women I think , for autism ,style goes out the window , needs to be neat and tidy and even! which doesn’t always happen ! , my son   11yrs once asked when younger ‘mummy do all the autistics have to have bad hair so we know who they are?’

I reply no son but hair is sensitive for people with autism and they have to do lots of things at once, sit still, keep calm, trust it’s overwhelming for them  , he understood but it was at that point I realised stop styling oscars hair he doesn’t care and your getting it hugely wrong he looks awful!

today was oscars first school photo at big boy school his hair was left well alone .

So for now we go for functional we sometimes have to stagger haircuts to make them bearable , asleep ones don’t work anymore but if we are quick and target problem areas , that has to be enough💙💙💙💙💙 there are some amazing barbers and hairdressers that are trained and experienced in cutting, children with special needs hair with amazing results, I’m just not brave enough yet , I need Oscar to keep trusting me for now I brush his teeth .
