Holidays/ planning/ prep
Any autism parent that’s ever taken a holiday abroad or in the UK will agree they take planning and lots of preparation , mentally too , as no matter how much you finely tune things ASD children are unpredictable , we avoid stupid early starts they simply do not work for us , purely down to medication .
i personally have kept the same list of things to pack for around three years I just add to it as he gets more complicated , new medications or books , when we travel I have to take food packs as he will only eat a very limited diet , I take two split into two cases, medication again two lots, in two different cases in clear bags with a doctors letter, should we lose a case I still have enough to see us through , it’s important to put any food or medication in the case as not allowed in hand luggage , I also have to take baby milk as although 5yrs old , he will still only drink hipp organic milk , we have to take his bedding , night light, singing spider , books , a toy case, favourite books, all of these are familiar things, allowing us to sleep away from home it works well for us, Oscar actually loves to travel and has been to Ireland, France multiple times, Spain and America and many short holidays overnight in the UK , peppa pig world, legoland and Center parks,we could be confused for a family actually moving !!!!, we have narrowed a down as much as autism will allow ,and in fact we all travel very light to allow for oscars extra luggage it’s just what we have to do to be able to go on holiday .
Last October we took the children to Spain we had a great time all planned around Oscar ,on the way home we chatted about how successful the trip had been , things then took a turn we land at Gatwick, it’s 😱😱😱😱😱around 530pm very tricky time of night as Oscar is due his meds ,and milk around this time , I had left a bottle and the milk in the car so I could tip it in , and he could drink it while we pack the car that way by the time we got home he would be wanting to go to bed, if only it was that simple !!!!😱we had landed , before I pick Oscar up I check my bag no passports! I call to Brendan and ask did you not give me back the passports? No he says you always carry them, but I remember Oscar didn’t board well and was kicking and screaming we had to be assisted to the plane, we had done passport control I must have put them back in my bag, I check again they are not in there !!!!, by this time people are getting off , we are situated at the back checking all our other bags now getting frantic, Oscar needs a bum change and is wanting to run around , the cabin crew come over by this time we are last on the plane oscars getting fed up and my other kids just want to get off, I explain we can’t find our passports , we are detained on the plane until they are found they will not accept us into the UK without them! I’m thinking really? This has to be a joke!! Oscars in my arms by this point I start to get anxious I have no milk he’s going to be late for medication! This isn’t good !!!! 45 minutes go by there checking the plane and get my buggy, I don’t want to put Oscar down as , as the lady is talking to me I can feel something very wet and very warm soaking through my top!!!! He’s weeing on me !!!! A lot!!!!! Almost an hour now and we’ve been standing around neither of us can remember who had the passports last then someone comes up and says Barker? We reply yes 🎉🎉he’s holding the passports , they had scattered all over the floor of the cargo hold on the plane, Brendan had panicked that Oscar was Kung fu panda on the runway and he had stuck them in the hood of the buggy! We count the passports 4!!!! There’s only 4 ! We still have another 1 to find!!!again just as we thought we could leave the plane, we are stopped 😑another ten minutes go by then he reappears he had found it we could leave the plane , but then the pilot comes up looking really cross , he said you will have to walk across the bus has gone! Don’t ever do that again the next flight is delayed because of you! I just wanted to get out of there fast, so I bit my lip , Brendan then piped up with ‘ we have got autism!!!!’ We have never used that line , ever. Brendan commented after wards he’s not sure where it even came from!!! It was a situation were we had reached our stress limits! As we get off the plane he looks across I just said in a pathetic voice ‘ we’ve got autism’😂he just didn’t have anything to say to the very cross pilot at that moment! It wasn’t intentional to cause the next flight to be delayed , there I was on a plane so relaxed and within an hour I was being told off like a school child covered in wee!
Always roll with the punches , never take it as too serious and know when your winning 💙
