The launch of Dreams 🌈🚀
When I was faced with giving up my job in fostering for 16 years , Which was to be fair much needed as my life was becoming impossible, and there’s only so much your colleagues should have to endure in terms of non commital or presence by phone!
I’m also aware that I was actually really good at my job , I love people and I’m genuinely committed to better outcomes for children and safeguarding ,so for me it was a huge loss I was part of a team I had purpose , but my job as mum and advocate for my special needs child as he grew was becoming a full time job plus 50 hours overtime per week!!!!! and I had to take control.
I had become Autism in the early days I was a bit bitter and I was defiantly winging it , plus I have two other children that really deserve the best of me as well ,not the scraps after autism parenting so I started my plan .
clothing was becoming more and more an issue for Oscar they would irritate him so bad yet he would be ready and willing to have a full on battle at getting dressed time, not to mention the fact that he was becoming so hard to manage in public as he was fine in his own safe space ,for a while, but when it came to venturing out at all anywhere he was becoming more and more difficult .
supermarket shopping o going into any shops and stopping the buggy became something that didn’t happen, unless you could shop in the time it took to eat a packet of Pom bears ! I was referred to early years help and from that point things started to change for us hope wise , it’s sad looking back as at one point I literally had none , I was at home with this baby who was just so unhappy most of the time despite my efforts , it was like peeling an onion everyday it just got more and more , new problems , new hurdles .
I was now in the system I wasn’t alone anymore we had diagnosis, we had been introduced to support workers and specialist nursery’s both therapeutic and mainstream .
Kent portage would visit our home every week to teach him to play and interact, I was networking with other parents they had hold of us and it felt good , I thought back to those early days, and I just wanted to give something back , how would I ever repay ?
when I had the idea of born anxious it was weird it literally came to me out of knowwhere like I wasn’t driving it ,I had the ideas , named it and came up with like 5 designs , I just noted it a down I wasn’t really sure if it was a crazy idea, I kept it to myself at first did a bit of research then again I found myself trademarking my logo it just happened!
I decided that a percentage would go to the Kent Autistic trust and Kent portage , i feel if you connect the small dots first they lead to the bigger picture , so I set about contacting both charities and they loved my ideas and we began planning , with some help of some people that are far more advanced than myself with any kind of computer work , I wrote my business plan it was great at that point to share my vision, for sensory clothing that has no labels that can raise awareness in communities for Autism and disabilities , but also provide light relief in a play area when my child grabs your boobs steals your keys and humps your leg within 30 seconds !!!!, In those situations when you have perhaps got a bit brave and ventured out alone to a soft play just so your not on your own at home, as it’s unmanageable and you fancy going somewhere else to struggle! people stare but it has, BEE KIND I HAVE AUTISM on the t shirt and all of a sudden your getting smiles not snarles , I even got a free cupcake once! Winner 🎉
But not only that it’s a good reminder not everyone is how they look , my Oscar is cherub on the outside , Tasmanian devil on the inside at times , the t shirts for me have had the most value on holidays and travelling and so the awareness is out there, through wearing them and through donations on a larger scale it’s helping in bigger areas , it feels good, we started with an Etsy page then came the blog ,and today we launch our website and I have to say I’m really blinking proud of this 💙💙💙💙🎉
( full credit to Jade and Spencer and Nick, who have all believed in me and my vision and at points batshit crazy ideas, they have helped me bring it to life)
