Born Anxious is a homegrown clothing label with two objectives, to make the clothes as comfortable as possible, whilst also remaining planet friendly, and to hold important information that will aim to help not only the child, but also the caregiver as well when required. As an autism mum myself, I have thought about what could help me and other caregivers whilst trying to be as generic as possible within the designs, alongside giving those the opportunity to personalise their products as well.

Eating disorder

Eating disorder

Autism and food do not mix  for us when the sensory issues, outweigh the need/ want of food, Oscar can go 24/36/48 hours without any food, if his sensory needs tell him it’s not going in his mouth ,he sits ready to eat attempts it but his autism will not let him overcome the anxiety about food , everything touches the lips or he point blank refuses , after a sick bug this week all our progress with food and eating has disappeared out the window , Oscar was sick for two days didn’t eat and had broken his relationship with the limited foods he did trust to eat , which consist of toast only 50/50 bread cut into triangles well done , organic carrot sticks , tuc crackers , garlic bread pizza organic buiscotti biscuits with Mickey Mouse on  , and occasionally and this is very new french fries from macdonalds that is it ,no sweets, no yogurts, no fruit no veg , in fact Oscar will not eat anything sweet at all, he leans towards salt .

Due to poor diet I supplement Oscar with

well kid syrup

omega three fish oil syrup

biocult infant probiotic

well kid calcium liquid

i also spray his bread or fries with olive oil to add fat into his diet which helps with cell renewal and transfers his medication around his body better as without fat in his body his epilim can’t transfer around his body and he has been having more abscences recently .

so Oscar hadn’t managed to pick up his eating since Tuesday, he has picked but not finished even one cracker, and today has literally eaten his buicuits at breakfast a tiny bite of each crust of a garlic pizza he is simply not hungry , meaning now I’m unable to give his full dose of medication this evening  and it’s firework season we could be in for a long night !

food is such a huge issue for kids with Autism they either follow a sensory diet of textures / flavours or aren’t motivated by food at all ,due to the fact that they are hypersensitive through Autism or they are undersensative and eat anything even sometimes if it’s not food! Children with autism can have an irregular body clock many have sleep issues this has a knock on affect with eating for us oscar doesn’t get hungry at the usual mealtimes so we have to adapt to this for him.

So there we have it another complex issue connected to Autism that we manage daily , yes I worry ,but I have learned to amend doses for medication, have a good relationship with his school who keep a food diary ,and I’ve learned to not stress over it as Oscar does  pick up on that which makes it worse  , I have no choice but to let it go he will follow his own senses, whether  they are disorganised or not, and there’s nothing we can do about this we make avast range of foods available for Oscar to graze on if he wished and always offer variety he tends to give it bs k yo us if it’s new , some children with Autism are tube fed so I’m thankful Oscar eats even if it is limited and only a nibble today .

There are many issues why children with Autism struggle with food, gut bacteria can cause constipation for example   , if lucky you will be referred to feeding clinic which we have, they give advice and things to try it’s such a slow process , led by your child with their own adgenda!
