Born Anxious is a homegrown clothing label with two objectives, to make the clothes as comfortable as possible, whilst also remaining planet friendly, and to hold important information that will aim to help not only the child, but also the caregiver as well when required. As an autism mum myself, I have thought about what could help me and other caregivers whilst trying to be as generic as possible within the designs, alongside giving those the opportunity to personalise their products as well.

Chicken nuggets will do

So this week my preverbal 5 year old ASD , extreme anxiety, abscence epilepsy , darling cheeky chops son, who also  has a huge texture avoidance and is a sensory eater, and  displays extreme and unpredictable behaviour at points  , has decided he wants to also be given the label of chicken nugget hoover! I mean I think he would eat 50 of them in a row if you let him he doesn’t appear full !

We  went to a local wildplay area for a walk and on the way home stopped at McDonald’s we always get oscar a happy meal with a bread roll, he excitedly opens the box removes the toy then does it up and hands it back, not interested in the food 🙃this time we are at home at the table , Oscar was getting closer and closer to his sister ,he was eyeing  up her nuggets🎉 she moved them closer and he reached out for one , then he took a bite then another then another🎉🎉🎉🎉he ate the entire box 🎉🎉🎉🌟she didn’t mind she was in shock ,and we all sat round silent incase we put him off , it was surreal as a moment like that, you want to clap and cheer but you can’t you have to keep calm .

Oscar has never weaned onto solid cooked foods, he lead weaned as a baby and when I say that , he  wasn’t even really lead weaning, it really wasn’t any kind of weaning he used to eat cucumber and yellow or orange peppers and apples and cheese and yogurt  , that lasted until he was around 18 mths and then he stuck to tuc crackers , organic carrot crisps and organic oat bars , he used to love an oat bar ,but then he just dropped them, which was a shame as they used to fill him up , he had an incident once where he got one stuck on the roof of his mouth, and was sick and since he won’t touch them, he replaced these with bread first of all it was cob loaf then it was bread rolls ,then he dropped both and started eating toast 50:50 bread from Aldi's, he wont touch other bread as this one has a certain smell, he still eats toast but currently won’t eat the fresh cut bread he may pick this back up he has phases, and truth be told food has been a huge issue for us since he started eating ,he won’t use cutlery , he can’t hold his breath or breath through his nose ,so there’s a huge list of reasons why he’s unable to process the sensation of eating, I don’t think oscar has ever shown us any indicators of actually being hungry !

with all this in mind it’s every reason why my son eating chicken nuggets is huge! Could it open the door for more exploration with food? Wouldn’t that be amazing🌟 , but for now chicken nuggets will do 💙I never thought I would be happy about that, but we have bigger reasons on the adgenda.

oscar takes three different medications that he requires a certain level of oil / fat in his blood for it to travel around his blood and distribute in his body , this has proved so hard as your medicating your child but it isn’t working ,because they won’t eat, and it’s just sitting in their tummy probably making him feel a bit sick! Which then makes him not want to eat so it’s catch 22 ,for us and many other parents , we did introduce omega 3 fish oil to help, and have been spraying his toast with olive oil ,just to try and get some oil in his diet which is also massively helpful for cell renewal  , we want oscar to develop and progress and not be static ,so it’s something we really have had, on our minds, the question  How can we get our child to eat a balanced  diet that provides him with protein, calcium and enough fat? and until this point we have had to resort to supplements , but now he will eat chicken nuggets which is a really good addition , as it provides protein and fat which he needs both, we are still continuing with the supplements for now and mindful not to crash and burn with the nuggets, as we did have a month last year were he would eat french fries ,and in our excitement I think we over did things as he stopped eating them after a few weeks!!! And now refuses them flatly , I want to take it slow with these nuggets 😂

so everything’s ticking over for now it’s not perfect but food wise another item with purpose, hopefully medication can work better and we’re working with what we have .

The next challenge is reintroducing drinking from a sippy cup or any cup!!!! to be bloody honest  ( regression of this was aged 2! )

to be continued ............
